PediatricsPediatric practice advice on keeping your baby safe

Pediatric experts in Gastonia, NC recommend that you make the room your baby will be sleeping in as safe and comfortable as possible. In the case of a new baby, start with the bed. The safest way for an infant under twelve months old to sleep is in a crib with a fitted sheet, or a bassinet, without soft objects, in the same room you sleep in (but never the same bed) with the room being kept at a comfortable temperature. The crib should have a firm, flat mattress and no bumper pads. Rather than use a blanket, keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature.Crib slats should be less than two and three-eighths inches apart, and there should be no large cut-outs. In short, there should be no place where the head of a baby could get stuck.

Go over the room, looking for loose strings. This includes strings and ribbons on toys, drawstrings on clothing and especially the window blinds and curtains. These latter should be pinned up with clothespins to get them out of reach. Anything painted should have been made after 1978, to eliminate the risk of lead-based paint. Remember that babies like to chew, and you can never be too sure about what they will try to chew.

Even when your child is old enough to sleep in his or her own room, make sure all sharp objects and all medicines in your bedroom, and everywhere else in your house, are out of reach. And have the number of your pediatric practice ready, just in case.

Kitchen safety

There are a number of things that need to be locked before your children are old enough to start reaching things. Your stove and dishwasher should be locked, there should be childproof latches on the cabinet doors, and the knobs on the stove should either be protected or removable. Matches and lighters should be stored in a locked cabinet. Cleaning supplies and alcohol, refrigerator magnets and other small objects, and medicine bottles should be kept out of reach. The same goes for anything breakable, especially if it is made of glass.

Pediatric experts recommend you try to see the kitchen from the perspective of a small child. If there is a pot handle or cup of hot coffee within reach, move it out of reach.
