August is Children’s Eye Health Awareness Month, and kid’s doctors have some advice on keeping track of your children’s eyesight at all stages of their childhoods. There are many vision problems which can be corrected easily in childhood, but can be fixed only with great difficulty or not at all later on. A good Gastonia, NC kid’s doctor can perform a routine vision screening as well as a pediatrician, but to get a comprehensive eye exam or deal with any problems that emerge you should consult an ophthalmologist.

Signs of vision problems at various stages

Newborn babies can’t see very well, and it takes several months for their brains to work out how to get their eyes to work together properly. If your baby’s eyes seem to be turning inward or outward a lot, or if your baby is slow to learn how to track moving objects, this may be a sign of a problem. Be sure to bring it up with your kid’s doctor. Strabismus is a problem in which the eyes tend to point in different directions, and it’s one of those problems that can be corrected in early childhood much more easily than later. The age of three to three and a half is a good time for the first vision and eye alignment test, unless problems become apparent sooner.

As children grow older, warning signs of vision problems are more likely to appear in their habits. If they squint a lot, complain of things looking blurry, hold books close to their faces or hold their faces close to the computer, these are obvious signs of a problem. Less obvious signs include turning their head to the side a lot, or often losing their place while reading. If they have a newfound reluctance to read, draw or do other things that require vision, this may also be a sign of a problem. Remember that children, like everyone else, can’t see out of anyone’s eyes but their own, and have nothing to compare their vision to. They won’t necessarily realize if they have a problem with vision. Pay attention if any of your child’s teachers report that they have trouble seeing the board.
